Terms of Use
Effective date: June 20, 2026 · Version: 1.2
Short version: Personal, educational, evaluation/testing, and other non-commercial use are allowed. Company, production, revenue-generating, resale, white-label, marketplace, and competing commercial-product use require written authorization.
1. Product identification & ownership
GhostMap is a product. The GhostMap software, name, branding, ghost mark, and original source code are owned by the GhostMap project owner / MarxWellB. GhostMap is source-available under the GhostMap Free Non-Commercial License; the source is visible only to make installation, audit, and review possible under these terms. Commercial, company, or production use requires written authorization (see section 5). A copy of the GhostMap Free Non-Commercial License ships under LICENSE in the source repository.
Third-party components incorporated into the extension keep their own upstream licenses and are listed in the THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md file shipped in the source repository.
2. Allowed use without a commercial license
You may use, copy, modify, and run GhostMap without a commercial license for:
- Personal use.
- Educational use.
- Evaluation and testing.
- Other non-commercial use.
3. Prohibited use without written authorization
Unless you have written authorization from the GhostMap project owner, or a commercial license issued through a future licensing flow, you may not use GhostMap for:
- Company, business, or commercial use.
- Production or revenue-generating environments.
- Products, services, workflows, internal tools, or paid client work that generate money or support paid work.
- Redistribution, resale, sublicensing, white-labeling, marketplace republishing, or offering GhostMap as part of another product or service.
- Copying GhostMap code to create a competing or derivative commercial product.
4. Voluntary donations and supporter benefits
Donations and supporter contributions are entirely voluntary and separate from the commercial-use authorization in section 3. Possible future voluntary support platforms include Lemon Squeezy, Patreon, and Ko-fi; none are active today and they are not advertised here as active channels. Voluntary support and commercial-licensing inquiries go to getghostmap@proton.me.
Supporter benefits may include public acknowledgement (with consent), supporter updates, community / basic support, and early preview information about upcoming work. These benefits are not pricing tiers and do not grant any commercial-use right. Specifically, no donation, supporter contribution, or supporter benefit grants company, business, production, revenue-generating, client, resale, white-label, marketplace-republish, or competing-product rights.
5. Commercial licensing
Commercial use as described in section 3 requires written authorization from the GhostMap project owner. Today, written authorization is granted by direct contact at getghostmap@proton.me. A future structured licensing flow may be introduced; until then the contact email is the canonical route. Commercial authorization is not included in the free non-commercial license and is not included in any donation or supporter contribution.
6. Pre-release status
GhostMap is currently in pre-release (V1 series). Behavior may change between versions. Some languages are documented as Tier 2 or Tier 3 with known limitations; consult the language support matrix and the documentation before relying on extraction quality for those languages.
7. Third-party components
GhostMap incorporates third-party components, each licensed under its own terms. The GhostMap license does not replace or override those upstream licenses. See the THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md file shipped in the source repository for attribution and license details.
8. Trademarks and product identity
"GhostMap", the GhostMap ghost mark, and the Ghost-prefixed product vocabulary (Ghost Tree, Ghost Engine, Ghost Index, Ghost Anchors, Ghost Diagnostics, Ghost Comments, Ghost Threads, Ghost Graph, Ghost Watcher) are used to identify the extension and its features. You may reference these names in technical writing about the extension. You may not use them to suggest endorsement of a product or service that is not the GhostMap extension itself.
9. Future roadmap and server services
Future team-oriented capabilities and the integrations described in Roadmap: v2 vision (Jira / Slack flow, Ghost Threads, Ghost Graph, dashboards, AI explanations, permissions and audit log) are not implemented today. Future commercial or server-service components, if released, will carry their own license terms and privacy notices, and will require an explicit opt-in before any data leaves a user's machine. Nothing in these Terms should be read as a commitment that such components will exist or that they will preserve the local-only posture of V1.
10. Privacy
GhostMap's data practices are governed by the GhostMap Privacy Policy. In short: the extension transmits no project data (source code, file contents, file paths, telemetry, or metadata) to GhostMap maintainers or GhostMap servers. Site font requests, hosting access logs, and voluntary support platforms (Lemon Squeezy, Patreon, Ko-fi) are separate from the extension and are covered in the Privacy Policy. For a copy of the current Privacy Policy, contact getghostmap@proton.me.
11. No warranty
GhostMap is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. You use GhostMap at your own risk.
This includes, without limitation: data loss in .ghostmap/ persistence files, missed symbols in the Ghost Tree, false positives in diagnostics, incorrect rendering of nesting, performance regressions, conflicts with other extensions, and any decisions you make based on what the Ghost Tree shows or does not show.
12. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent allowed by law, the GhostMap project owner, contributors, and maintainers are not liable for any claim, damages, data loss, business interruption, lost profits, or other liability arising from GhostMap or your use of GhostMap.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of the maintainer's jurisdiction, except where local law overrides. Disputes that cannot be resolved through good-faith contact at getghostmap@proton.me fall back to the maintainer's local courts. Large organization deployments should confirm their own compliance requirements before rollout.
14. Changes to these terms
These terms, the license model, and supporter-benefit framing may change for future versions of GhostMap. Changes do not retroactively remove personal, educational, evaluation/testing, or other non-commercial permission already granted for versions you obtained under the then-current license. Changes may affect future versions and any future commercial authorization. The product owner reserves the right to revise the license model (including the structure of allowed and prohibited use, the supporter benefits framework, and any future commercial licensing system) for future versions.
15. Intellectual property
All intellectual property in GhostMap (the original source code, the Ghost-prefixed vocabulary, the ghost mark, documentation, screenshots, and product copy on this docs site and the marketing site) is owned by the GhostMap project owner. Nothing in these terms transfers ownership of GhostMap intellectual property to any user, supporter, or licensee. Permitted use under section 2 and any commercial license under section 5 grant only the use described in those sections; they do not transfer ownership.
16. Contact
Commercial-licensing inquiries, written-authorization requests, legal questions about these terms, security reports, and bug reports all go to getghostmap@proton.me. This email is the canonical contact channel for any user-facing matter related to GhostMap.
